The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place Book I The Mysterious Howling Maryrose Wood Jon Klassen 9780061791055 Books

The Incorrigible's is a delightful, fun, brilliant read. With it's early 19th century historical setting, a narration that is both modern and fitting for the time period, and wonderful illustrations, made for a book I thoroughly enjoyed.

The story follows that of Miss Penelope Lumley, who's a 15 yr old graduate from the Swanburne Academy. She finds herself the governess at the Ashton Place and in charge of three children, whom Lord Ashton claimed he found and were raised by wolves in the property's vast forest. I really liked Miss Lumley's character. She didn't put up with much, and completely stood up for the children. She was more their guardian than the some what spoiled and clueless (when it comes to kids), Lady Constance.

I fell in the love with the Incorrigible Children almost as fast as Miss Lumley does. Penelope tries her best to teach the children manners, to speak both English and Latin, and gives them a basic education. Her biggest challenge is teaching them to be children, and not wolves. There's a mystery to the story, as Lord Ashton hasn't been honest with his colleagues about the children, and something is hidden within the walls of Ashton Place.

I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series. There's so much left to be uncovered and I can't wait to learn what Maryrose Wood has in store for the children and Miss Penelope Lumley. I highly recommend The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place. I think it will make for both a wonderful read out loud, as well as a wonderful book for older grade school and even middle school children to read.

The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place Book I The Mysterious Howling Maryrose Wood Jon Klassen 9780061791055 Books Reviews

This was one of the book I was supposed to read for Cybils. I am just now getting to it. It was one of a little over 20 I was unable to read before the deadline. I read the reviews of those on my panel who were able to read it first and envied them. This was such a fun book to read. The idea of a 15 year old governess taking care of children who had been raised by wolves seems preposterous to adults. That is exactly what makes it so charming and what will draw the kids in.
The governess is only 15 when she takes on the challenge of not only educating the children in the English language, but also in how to dress properly. I loved the names of the children Cassiopeia, Beowulf, and Alexander. It gave a since of charm and age to the story. In the midst of trying to teach the children, Penelope finds someone is trying to stop her. The mysteries continue to the end leaving an even bigger mystery that leads us to the next book. I loved it. I believe any fan of the Lemony Snicket books will find this series just as charming.
A ridiculous little story replete with lessons on vocabulary, grammar, stalactites, and stalagmites, etc. It is written in quite an old fashioned way. You will find no bad language, no sex, and no graphic violence. I don't want to be over "optoomuchstic," but I strongly recommend buying the entire set at once to save time going back and purchasing each volume separately. Ahwoooo!
The first book in the series introduces us to Miss Penelope Lumley, a fifteen year old graduate of the Swanburne Academy for Poor Bright Females. She is off to her first interview as a governess, excited about her new charges and curious about the advertisements indication for experience with animals. In her interview, Lady Constance quickly hires her and has her sign a contract. Much to her surprise, her charges are 3 feral children found in the woods and apparently raised by wolves. They have been named by Lord Frederick as Alexander,Beowulf, and Cassiopeia, ranging in age from about 4 or 5 to about 10 for Alexander. They have been kept in the barn, and Penelope quickly sets out to befriend them and move them to better quarters. With the help of her favorite series of books and some good food from Cook, she begins the process of educating the children. She must use her problem solving skills to solve issues such as squirrel chasing, and while she works to teach the children, she puzzles over how they ended up in the woods. When she is asked to have the children ready for a big party, Penelope does her best, even though she worries that the children may not be quite ready for such an endeavor. She uses the wisdom of Agatha Swanburne to help guide her and adds a few choice sayings of her own along the way. This is a delightful start to the series, and will definitely be enjoyed by fans of Lemony Snicket and Roald Dahl.
We do lots of read alouds for our homeschool and all my children, from the teens to the four year old enjoyed this series.
I admit, I judged this book by it’s cover when I first heard about it (as Agatha Swanburne would say “A book is always judged by it’s cover until it is read”), thinking it would be some kind of horror novel. I couldn’t have been more wrong and so pleasantly surprised. The writing is witty and refreshing, interesting enough for even adults to be kept interested.
We read all four so far, and can hardly wait for the next one to be released this year.
For anyone looking for a series with a strong female lead this is it. Penelope is so brave and confident even at a young age she is a great roll model for all girls. She puts on a brave face and fearlessly ventures out into life as a governess only to be surprised to find her students are three siblings who were found being raised by wolfs!! Although the Ashton estate and family is surrounded by mystery, Penelope does her best to teach her pupils and look deeper into the mysteries surrounding her.

For any kid looking for a mystery series that will also make you laugh this is what you’re looking for! I heard about the series from the Read-aloud Revival Podcast. I quickly blazed through the series and even as an adult I loved them. I’ve now decided to buy the series to read to my 6 year old and save for her to read herself as she gets older.
