Introduction to Geographic Information Systems, 6e is designed to provide students in a first or second GIS course with a solid foundation in both GIS concepts and the use of GIS. Introduction to GIS strikes a careful balance between GIS concepts and hands-on applications. The main portion of the chapter presents GIS terms and concepts and helps students learn how each one fits into a complete GIS system. At the end of each chapter, an application section with 2-7 tasks presents students with actual GIS exercises and the necessary data to solve the problem.

This book was the exact book I need for a class I was taking. I bought the book brand new because I needed the CD with it. When I received the book, I noticed that there was a cut on the top front cover of the book, that looks like it may have been from a box cutter. I also noticed on the bottom, front right corner that the cover was starting to peel away from the book itself. It's not a huge deal, but if I'm paying the money for a brand new book, then I would like it to look like a brand new book.Product details

Excellent source
Great.
Terrible! I have to use this book for a class so I had no choice in the matter. However, the instructions for the lab sections for working in ArcGIS provide terrible instructions that are not specific enough. As a first time user I wasted tons of time searching for buttons and functions that were not properly described in the instructions. The book has adequate information about general GIS topics, however it has a horrible correlation with the instructions listed for performing functions in the ArcGIS computer program.
Lots of typos and some out of date information. Most of the exercises revolve around Idaho, which gets old and is not challenging. However, this is a good reference for GIS users and does contain useful, detailed information.
Waste of money. Unless your professor explicitly tests you on this book, don't buy it.
During the semester I had to use this book I didn't find it very helpful. Then when I got to Adv. GIS and saw that useless textbook I came to realize that this book isn't so bad after all.
This book offers an approachable yet detailed overview of numerous GIS concepts. Chang avoids being tied to any particular platform, instead explaining why each concept is important and when it should be used. Recommended for GIS newcomers as well as experienced users who want a reference for when they need to perform analysis beyond their comfort zone.
